Mikey and the band were on tour when the virus hit, as was his boyfriend's, so there was a mad rush to get home to their loved ones when people started dropping like flies. He managed to get back in time to share his mother's last few moments and then back to Los Angeles to find that his partner had also come down with the virus. Matt was still fighting to recover when military forces informed them that they were to go to the compound, or at least, Matt was. Mikey had to scramble to tag along, getting their lives packed up and their pets organised, so that they wouldn't have to be separated any further.
